The author, Eileen O'Keffe McVicker, grew up in Eastern Oregon. Her father had grown up in Glendalougha in County Kerry, Ireland. He lived and worked at an abandoned castle called Lindfield House, as a teenager, working for the caretaker. "Dad talked about the big barn on the ground level where the cows had been kept.........."
This painting, like the 2 before it pictured below, was done during the pandemic. I see now that they are all about strange lights. It has been a strange, and for many, very sad year; as COVID-19 has now killed nearly half a million Americans.
I was also in grief this year, losing our beloved dog, and then raising a puppy! This got me using more pastels to help control my time and work space, etc.;(a puppy changing working in one's home as much as a new baby does.) I liked combining them with acrylics a lot. I had done it a little some time ago. It required a lot of special ways of securing the 2 mediums on the surface but I was familiar with them already.

"Just as he was settling in to milk, with his forehead against the soft side of the cow, the light would appear off to one side. It was a strange glow exactly at the height a man would carry a lantern. It wasn't a scary kind of light; in fact it was rather dark in the lower level [of the castle] so it seemed a friendly thing that this lantern-level glow would accompany him all the while he was tending to the cow and milking her. When he was done for the night the light would disappear....."

Salinas River in Winter Storm

I had to walk out on this small walkway on the overpass on Blanco Road near Research Drive in a pouring rainstorm. The oncoming traffic was going so fast and the visibility was so awful. I was very anxious. Plus the first time my batteries were out on the camera and I had to go to a nearby store, buy batteries and the canvas, and do it again! A woman in the line next to me said this is called something like "rivers or streams through the rain" (?) I will have to look that up. (I could hardly drive the car at times.) Fortunately I had on my neon green rain jacket where I look like a crossing guard. I photographed the river. I had only a few weeks to complete it in time to submit it, and I was going to Oregon in a few days. So I couldn't wait. Plus rain is my favorite weather. But the river was too sprawling and majestic to use a smaller canvas. It is not like the Carmel River! And here it is very excited, because it is about to join the ocean in a mile!
I then went down below the overpass, in a vast recycling dump, with these huge caterpillars slowly loading mounds of .....whatever....... silently, remotely, and in the rain; to try to see the river more closely but the road was flooded and I couldn't get close. It was so isolated and I felt...uncanny. A man came up and said, "I will just leave the gate of the center open. Put the padlock on when you leave!" I said, "No! I think I better leave." I somehow did not see myself in the role of locking up the Salinas Dump. He said "Are you photographing birds?" When I told him, he was apologetic. He didn't think 'their' river looked very good today. " It is all muddy and brown." he said! He thought it was ugly. I said, "Not to me!"

Writing notes until the Home Studio tour: Tomorrow I have computer work to do...typing up all the Irish poems and legends which accompany my paintings for the Pacific Grove Art Center Exhibit opening early September. I also need to choose a painting to be in the Habitat for the Arts Exhibit in Seaside which goes up in early September. I would like to do Molly Bloom or a painting I did of Bridey years ago, from a photograph, but they are both larger than the size limit. I will check tomorrow to see if they may make an exception, which they indicated was possible. I usually paint pretty large. Until this past year. I was traveling to Oregon a lot and very focused on what was happening up there, with my sister. For some reason I began to paint much smaller. I could finish a painting even though I was often coming or going, or could be suddenly interrupted. I can see there is such a somberness to them in a way however; they are a real witness of the whole family's year of 'goodbyes'. Goodbyes for now that is. Goodnight ,not-a-blog.

Give them unquiet dreams;
Leaning softly out

This painting was done by sketching the pelicans using binoculars. I had never done that before! I was able to watch them for so long that it worked out really well and was a lot of fun. I went back one more time just to draw the ocean. In between the 2 visits I went and bought myself a really good pair of binoculars and it was so enjoyable. I am not a plein air artist. I don't go with canvas and paints, water, brushes, rags, etc. and work outdoors, but I always paint from animals or foliage I have seen on hikes primarily in and around Carmel.

I passed along the water's edge below the humid trees,
My spirit rocked in evening light, the rushes round my knees,
My spirit rocked in sleep and sighs; and saw the moorfowl pace
All dripping on a grassy slope, and saw them cease to chase
Each other round in circles, and heard the eldest speak:
Who holds the world between His bill and made us strong or weak
Is an undying moorfowl, and He lives beyond the sky.
The rains are from His dripping wing, the moonbeams from His eye.

In the middle of the way
under the wet of late September
the ash tree flails,
our dog is tearing earth beside the house.
[however in the painting there is neither a flailing ash tree nor is the dog digging a hole by the house, still....]
In rising ditches the fern subsides.
Rain-logged berries and stones
are rained upon, acorns
shine from grassy verges every morning.

the Wolf and the Wonderful Fairy Cow
"But when he arrived home and looked over the yard and the stable and the field, there was no sign nor sight of the cows. So he grew very sad and dispirited. But just then he espied in the field three of the most beautiful and strange cows he had ever set eyes on.-----there stood a young, black wolf watching. Then Connor knew that his friend the wolf had kept his word. So he let the cows back into the field and there they remained and grew to be the finest in the whole country, and their descendants are flourishing to this day---"

---for many years I painted what seemed to be icons....large paintings of animals and/or people and often in a rather frontal pose; I am strongly influenced by patterns of folk art and by primitive art. These were somewhat majestic and had a strong sense of presence and conveyed a strong mood as well as being very colorful.

Many of my collages contain whole pages and/or sections of dream diaries, my journals, prayers, and lists of things to do in my daily life. In this way I can keep, in some form, these parts of the unconscious with me. I destroy every journal I write as soon as the notebook is filled, or place them in paintings or in some cases bury them under stairs or behind chimneys, etc. in houses or on grounds where I have lived in.....

I have a history, and a lot of interest in fibre arts and in collage. I used to do tapestry weaving. I had to return to painting and drawing though because I am a draw-er. I can draw , and have since early childhood, and like to do so very much and I missed the exercise of this in my art when I was weaving exclusively. I was happy with parts of it, raising my own sheep, (on the baby bottle!) and spinning the wool...teaching spinning and weaving in Oregon. But I am back where I began. My undergraduate degree is in Fine Arts with a painting emphasis.

"Because of the non-religious meaning of the term magic I prefer to call it numinous realism: a realism that depicts ordinary things, ordinary persons, ordinary events, but it is a numinous realism. It depicts them in a way that makes them strange, mysterious, laden with an ambiguous power. Much primitive art has this power." - Karl Rahner
